Weymouth FC Urge Councillors Not To Kill Their Stadium Dream

Weymouth Football club have written to councillors asking them not to kill their dream of a new stadium.

The club is now backing plans to build homes on land surrounding the Bob Lucas, which they say is currently a concrete jungle.

They want to work with developers to find a new site for a new stadium that would also act as a community sports hub for the town.

In a joint statement made by Directors on the Club's website, they say:

"It is possible that the Councillors will reject planning and kill the dream. The Board really cannot see who would gain from that but the decision lies with the Councillors. The Board is well aware of the objections of some local councillors to houses at the Bob Lucas Stadium while they approve permissions for hundreds of houses in their own wards."

"We now at least have that chance but councillors may take it away from us to keep the eyesore that is a concrete jungle of a car park and an old run down speedway track which resembles a tip. That isn't our land and the Councillors have not come up with a single idea as to how it can be improved. We have heard whispers of hotels or supermarkets over the years but this is all pie in the sky."

"The land is supposed to be for leisure purposes, unless we can locate better leisure facilities elsewhere. If planning permission is granted we at least have that chance. If it is not, we ask our supporters and the community of Weymouth to ask themselves, do they really think that a hotel is a leisure facility that the community wants or needs at the BLS?"

"How would the local community benefit from another hotel when we have so many that are under booked on the sea front? Do many of you fancy going on your holidays to the speedway track with the football club next door - maybe great for die-hard fans - but really? Anyway how is yet another huge Premier Inn or Travelodge any different to houses?"

The Directors are also urging Weymouth fans to rally behind the club and make the dream of a new stadium happen.
