Dorchester Town To Host WW1 Charity Match

DTFC new

8:35am 18th November 2014

Dorchester Town Football Club are lining up a very unusual opponent to help raise money for British troops returning from Afghanistan and for the families of those who've laid down their lives for their country.

Tickets are now on sale for a charity match between the Magpies and a Dorset Army 11 on 10th December.

All the proceeds will go to Blesma and Combat Stress charities.

There will also be a short service with music from the Royal Artillery Band and a military wives choir.

Outside the ground will be a chance to a replica of a First World War tank, built for the film War Horse, there will also be a number of stalls and displays around the stadium.

The Club's Community Director Allen Knott came up with the idea which is being supported by numerous local businesses: "I've been amazed at the momentum of the event; the support we've already received is wonderful. I think it is because the Christmas Truce is a story of the human spirit, of peace and of hope.

"This is an event for the whole community as we remember the men and women from this County who gave so much. We have lots of activities on the night, including a re-enactment and some wonderful Christmas music.

"The teams will walk onto the pitch to the sound of the crowd singing Silent Night. I don't think there will be a dry eye in the house."

Gates open at 5:30pm with formalities beginning at 6:45pm.
