It’s the biggest event of its kind along the South Coast.

Over 270 riders are expected to race in this lunchtime's Weymouth beach motocross.

They've even capped how many can take part in some races.

It’s the biggest event of its kind along the South Coast.

They’ll race laps around a three quarters of a mile sand track and you’ll be able to watch from the seafront. It’s run by the Weymouth and Portland Lions Club.

It can be a quite dangerous sport too.

Up to 95% of motocross riders have experienced an injury at some point in their career. Severe injuries are fairly common.

Despite that, Alf Stearn, Chairman of the Purbeck Motocross Club says the beach is an exciting arena for it. He says there’s one particular part he always looks forward to.

"The most exciting part of the race is when the flag drops and 130 have got to start their bikes and disappear down the other end. The noise is tremendous and in Motocross we call it ‘Rolling Thunder’".

"If you’re anywhere near the seafront today, you’ll be able to hear their engines along the beach near the pavilion. It’s free and we're taking donations for the Weymouth Lions Club Charity Club."
