Young Volleyball Stars Make It Through To Final

Published at 8:52am 3rd May 2012. (Updated at 10:39am 3rd May 2012)

Teams of youngsters have been taking to the volleyball court to fight for a place in the final of a prestigious competition.

Girls from Sir John Colfox School in Bridport and boys from Wey Valley school in Weymouth have won through to the Dorset Schools Games Final in Bournemouth in July.

Volleyball is one of the 16 sports events to feature in the competition which will coincide with the arrival of the Olympic Torch.

Head of Weymouth and Portland Tourism Matt Ryan said: "Weymouth has a great association with beach volleyball, hosting the country's leading event for over 25 years and organising a number of weekly club events on Weymouth Beach.
"I am sure the new Go Spike semi-permanent volleyball courts on Weymouth Beach will be a great venue for the Dorset schools event and attract lots of support and inspire people to come down to the beach and have a go ."

Miss Dale Rhodes Partnership Co-ordinator said: "We are looking forward to a great competition on the excellent Weymouth sands. The children are very excited and we are delighted with the great support from the borough council and local volleyball club."

The beach volleyball courts and nets have been supplied by Volleyball England's Go Spike Campaign.

Lisa Wainwright, Chief Executive of Volleyball England said: "Beach volleyball will be one of the most popular sports at the London 2012 Olympic Games and it is important we provide facilities ahead of the games for people to experience the sport as both players and spectators."

"There is already a lot of interest in the beach volleyball and the nets have been supplied as part of Volleyball England's Go Spike! Campaign which is focused on driving up adult participation in volleyball.

"We are delighted to be working with Weymouth and Portland Borough Council on this project and building a legacy for volleyball and sport in general. Beach volleyball provides an opportunity to involve more people in healthy lifestyles and create a sporting habit for life".

Meanwhile, 15 teams enjoyed the evening sun to compete in The Local “Weymouth Go Spike” league

The results of all the games were:-
